Many people are confounded by what I do.  Although jailhouse lawyers have played an extremely important role in the legal practice most never get the opportunity to use their skills and experience outside of the prison setting as I have.  Jailhouse lawyers refined their skills working inside of prisons.  We have been on the front-lines of sentence mitigation and wrongful conviction advocacy.

The experience of the jailhouse lawyer is invaluable.  He has had the misfortune of living the law practice.  The  jailhouse lawyer has experienced an interrogation, a trial, a plea bargaining hearing, a conviction and likely an appeal also.  He has not only litigated in the system but he has had to navigate the system as well. Your right to a lawyer begins at the very moment an officer informs you that you are being taken under arrest. 6th Amendment PicMiranda v. Arizona, 384 U.S. 436 (1966); Escobedo v. Illinois, 378 U.S. 478 (1964).  I’m sure, if you’ve ever been confronted with the police concerning a criminal offense, you have been read your “Miranda Rights”:

“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you? The criminal defendants we consult with for the most part do not have a working knowledge of the law.  Prisoners come to us seeking a basic understanding of the criminal justice system.  “I am not giving people any exclusive knowledge or advise in most instances,” says Anthony.  “The information we provide more times than not, is information I have gained through my experience 20 years experience navigating the system.”  Anthony says usually the answers are out there “somewhere”, but people have to sift through so much Red Tape to find it that they turn to consultants like myself for assistance.
